Geehi update

The Christmas break gave me an opportunity to make a decision on how I am going to proceed with the yard at Geehi. I thought long and hard about how I could improve the trackplan to give me better access and be able to reach all of the yard.
Overall view of the new narrow gauge yard at Geehi

In the end, the best outcome I decided was to start again. I don't enjoy ripping up what I have built, especially when I have so much to do on the rest of the layout. In the end the need to easily access all the track without destroying the models in the way, won out over the extra work.

The destruction took a few days and the new track has gone down very quickly. The new yard is slightly smaller than the old one but works much better. I can easily reach every track and except for one siding the broadgauge track is now behind the yard.

The narrow gauge station is now across the tracks from the much larger broad gauge station

Despite the extra work I am happy with the outcome. I now have a yard that is much easier to work and importantly one I can access.

  1. Good idea, going with access. I'm sure you'll be happy with the decision. By the way, congrats on the photos in the 100th issue of the NG&IR.
    Cheers!

  2. Great Idea and well thought out and in 10 years you will thank yourself for the work

  3. Always hard to look at all the work and then decide it's better to do a work-over. I'm sure you won't regret it ( eventually ). It would have niggled endlessly had you not.

  4. Thanks Ian & Richard, sometimes it is better to admit that I had made a mistake & fix it than live with it. The change has made shunting the yard much easier and something my kids can now do, which I wasn't game to let them do with the old yard

  5. Well you know what they say Murray , Less is More . As crazy as it sounds I've started to apply the 'Chanel' philosophy to a scene etc. i.e When its all dressed up take something(s) away. It becomes less busy, less conspired and strangely a little bit more akin to a 1:1 scene. We get tempted as modelers to cram space. It's hard not to I guess as we're trying to make out little bit of make believe come to life. Some habits are hard to break. I've liked following your build, keep going :)

    1. Richard I agree with you analogy that less is more and it improves the realism of the layout. If you want to fill your layout with "stuff" there is nothing wrong with that either... as long as you enjoy what you doing.

Glad you are enjoying the build
